The Mill Creek Capital Advisors Investment Process

Clients come to MCCA with investment preferences, some of which are rooted in their prior market experience or in their past dealings with other investment management firms. At the outset of our relationship with you, our role is to begin gaining a perspective on you, your financial needs, and your tolerance for investment risk. It is a hands-on process and one that continues throughout the client relationship.

Strategic Asset Allocation

Our process begins with identification of a strategic asset allocation that is customized to each client. This long-term strategic asset allocation, designed for each client’s unique circumstances, is the foundation of a client’s investment program. It is that combination of assets and strategies that will likely deliver the greatest long-term returns for the least amount of acceptable risks.

Tactical Asset Allocation

On an on-going basis, the MCCA team evaluates whether minor changes to the strategic asset allocation framework are advisable. The goal is not to make market timing decisions; rather, tactical changes to strategic asset allocations are generally made only at the margin so as to avoid certain investment risks or to take advantage of compelling investment opportunities within clients’ portfolios.

Portfolio Construction

The set of potential investments from which we build client portfolios takes into consideration the broadest possible set of available investment assets and investment strategies. We construct portfolios on the basis of expected returns, expected risks, and expected asset class correlations across the global universe of publicly traded investment securities and private investments. We evaluate the full range of investment strategies being applied across the various asset classes, from passive index-matching strategies to concentrated active management; from mutual funds to limited partnerships to structured investment products. We do so with the objective of linking time-tested investment principles and innovative approaches to meet clients’ unique financial needs.

Manager Due Diligence

MCCA’s identification of the specific role each asset or strategy will play within an investment portfolio helps us to intelligently narrow the portfolio manager search process. Quantitative analysis, independent research, and in-person meetings are all used to gain perspective on managers we identify as having a track record of delivering excess returns relative to the investment risks taken. Above all, we look for a philosophy, a process, and a team that will produce superior results across what we anticipate will be a long-term holding period for MCCA’s clients.
